What Is Iron Tide?
Iron Tide is an immersive, unscripted geopolitical simulation set at one of the most consequential decision points in modern strategic history: the moment a major Alliance formally recognizes Taiwan — and China prepares to respond with force.
Participants step into senior national-level decision-making roles across the full spectrum of state power — diplomatic, informational, military, and economic. The crisis is real. The adjudication is live. The outcomes are not scripted.
Every decision participants make directly shapes what the other team faces in the next round. There are no predetermined outcomes, no correct answers to find, and no way to game the system. There is only the problem in front of you, the team beside you, and the clock.

Simulation Structure & Format

Live, facilitator-moderated simulation with real-time adjudication and guided after-action review
Duration
Two full days — approximately 18 hours of total immersive simulation time

Four decision rounds with real-time updates, live crisis injects, and facilitated debriefs
Teams & Roles
Participants are assigned to national or organizational teams with defined roles and objectives structured across the DIME framework — Diplomatic, Informational, Military, and Economic.
Setting
Black Horizon's proprietary 2035 universe — a fully developed near-future world with documented political, military, and economic trajectories for 20+ countries and organizations. No prior wargaming experience required. All participants receive preparatory materials and in-simulation guidance.

Lt. Gen. (Ret.) David Wilson
Lieutenant General David Wilson retired from the U.S. Army in 2025 after 38 years of distinguished service, culminating as Deputy Chief of Staff, G-9, Headquarters, Department of the Army. Throughout multiple combat deployments and senior leadership assignments across the globe, he developed and refined his leadership under the most demanding operational conditions. A recognized expert in Indo-Pacific security, logistics, and sustainment operations, he commanded the U.S. Army's 8th Theater Sustainment Command, where he led strategic sustainment and readiness efforts across the world's largest and most complex theater. His extensive experience includes service and leadership roles on the Korean Peninsula, where he worked alongside U.S. and Republic of Korea forces to strengthen deterrence, enhance alliance interoperability, and sustain combat-ready formations in one of the world's most strategically significant regions.
Thomas Van Hare
Thomas Van Hare served as a political appointee across three White House administrations — Reagan, George H.W. Bush, and George W. Bush — with work spanning defense policy and reconstruction and stabilization operations in Afghanistan and Iraq.
A published author and professional wargame designer, he has spent his career operating at the intersection of political decision-making, strategic policy, and crisis management. He brings both practitioner experience and design expertise to every simulation he facilitates.
